Couples Massage Class {date nite}

Brian’s anniversary gift this year was a little out of the box. Hopefully it is a gift that will keep on giving throughout the year (and our marriage!). I found a living social deal for a 4-hour massage class, and decided to go for it!

First we had a quick dinner at Moochie’s Meatballs in downtown Salt Lake. It was your typical hole-in-the-wall place (aka AMAZING!) with quick service and delicious food. The owner, “Moochie”, is from Philly and decided a bring a little piece of it here to Salt Lake City. It brought me back to my roots, as my dad and I were both born in the same hospital outside Philadelphia. Moochie’s was even on the Food Network with Guy Fieri (see video clip below). I had the atomic meatball sandwich (with jalapenos  and feta) and Brian went for the Philly Cheesesteak.

With happy bellies, we headed up a few blocks to the Padgen Institute of Healing Arts. Steve Padgen created his own synthesis of techniques and instructed us on how to give a professional 60 minute massage. He and his wife, Holly, also a massage therapist, work together to teach classes for couples. How neat!

thankfully we got a booklet to take home!

Along with 3 other couples, we received a 1 hour instruction and demonstration and then took turns giving massages to each other. Holly and Steve walked around the room and gave us pointers on how to improve our technique. Effleurage...petrissage: these were the buzz words heard around the room that mean to length and lift the muscle. When Brian started working on my back, I had to check and make sure it was actually him — it felt almost too good to be true! As we were leaving the class, Brian said that was the most relaxed he’s felt – ever. It feels pretty good to know I was the one who did that, too.

Holly and Steve emphasized the massage should be pleasurable for the giver and the receiver. The giver has a chance to connect and serve their spouse. We hope this will continue to be the case for us. We’ve already scheduled a once a month massage “appointment” for both of us! 🙂
